Review: Elsker by ST Bende *Giveaway*

Our Review:
I'm doing a little something different for this review. I'm posting my review before the cover and synopsis. Why you ask? Because I need you to know a few things about this AMAZING book before you decide to click away. Elsker by ST Bende, is one of my favorite books of the year. And yes I can honestly say that with 5 months left in 2013. This book is so far outside of my usual genre, I can't even explain to you why I read it. Okay, so maybe I can. Long story short...Team Kellan backed Team Ull in the NA Alley New Adult Crush Tourney, we befriended the incredible ST Bende on Twitter, then she was kind enough to send us a review copy of Elsker. All I can say is God bless the tweeter, because I LURVED this book. It's definitely not my usual style. But there is an exception to every rule, right? Elsker is my exception!

Elsker is a new adult paranormal romance based around Norse mythology. WAIT! I know what you are thinking.

New Author +  tough genre to do justice - Norse mythology (really?) = I'll wait for books 2 and 3 to see how it goes.

Well I am here to tell you, READ IT NOW! ST Bende is an amazing up and coming author. Think: Jamie McGuire's Providence, Shelly Crane's Significance, or Colleen Hoover's Slammed (although sweet Will Cooper is not paranormal). They were all undeniably remarkable books by first time authors, and Elsker is no different.

Social outcast and book nerd Kristia Tostenson leaves her small town behind to find a life where she isn't the town freak show. She heads off to Cardiff University in Wales to finish her last year of college where she hopes to lead a normal life. Little does she know she will land the hottest graduate student on campus within days of starting classes.
"You must be talking about Ull Myhr. Tall, blonde, super fit. Unbelievably gorgeous"
Ull Myhr is also searching for a different life. He left his home to escape his destiny. Ull isn't your average graduate student, and unlike Kristia he isn't running from a small town in Oregon. He actually isn't of this world at all. In his home realm of Asgard, Ull is better known as fierce warrior and the God of Winter. This is a far cry from the sensitive, thoughtful, sweater wearing, church waffle making, uber traditional, sex on legs Ull that Kristia falls for.
"I couldn't get over the shock I felt at each touch or the way my pulse spiked when I looked at him. His endless supply of fitted sweaters didn't help either. If this kept up I was going to suffer a stroke at a tragically young age."
I love Kristia and Ull's relationship. It has a rocky beginning, but in typical NA fashion goes from 0-60 in approximately 4 pages. Kristia is not the normal wishy-washy heroine though. She is strong, decisive, and devoted. When she finds out about Ull's background, you don't have to read 100 pages of her running away and freaking out. No, not Kristia. I guess finding out your boyfriend is a Norse god isn't all that crazy when you have secret supernatural powers of your own.  Kristia and Ull must figure a way to overcome impending doom to keep their relationship and each other alive.
"You must have questions." Ull still looked so tense.
I squeezed his hands back. "Do you want to talk about it? Your Excellency?"
"Kristia--" Ull's brow furrowed and his mouth turned down.
"I'm kidding. Geez. Okay, yes, I have questions. About a million of them."
This book is fantastic, in case you missed that somewhere in this review. ST Bende has developed intriguing, witty, and strong characters that you can't help but love. Even if you are like me and don't care for mythology, you will love the complex yet easily understood world that ST paints. While this book is NOT a cliffhanger, it is book one in The Elsker Saga. Endre (Elsker #2) is expected to be released on September 9th, so go buy Elsker and get to reading NOW!

Rating: A Whole Bottle of Wine

You don’t win the heart of an immortal assassin without making a few enemies along the way.
Kristia Tostenson prefers Earl Grey to Grey Goose and book clubs to nightclubs, but when she transfers from her one-stoplight town to Cardiff University in Wales she falls in love with Ull Myhr.  Her new boyfriend isn’t exactly what she was expecting.  He’s an honest to goodness Norse God - an immortal assassin fated to die at Ragnarok, the battle destined to destroy Asgard and Earth.  Kristia’s crazy visions are the only thing that can save their realms.  Her orderly life just got very messy.

Author Interview:

Before finding domestic bliss in suburbia, ST Bende lived in Manhattan Beach (became overly fond of Peet’s Coffee) and Europe… where she became overly fond of the musical Cats. Her love of Scandinavian culture and a very patient Norwegian teacher inspired the ELSKER series. She hopes her characters make you smile and that one day pastries will be considered a health food.

What's up ST?! Thanks so much for joining us today.
Hei hei, Aly. Thanks so much for having me!

We need to get the most important question out of the way first...

Are you a wine drinker? If so, what is your favorite type? If not, name your poison? Coffee, Soda, Chocolate? All of the above?
I’ve been in the editing cave all week, so my current vice is caffeine. Iced soy lattes, black tea, maybe a daily cone of coffee flavored ice cream… or three…

Phew! Okay now we can move on...
Can you please give us the correct pronunciation of Ull?

It’s ooo-hl. Like drool, without the “dr”. ;)

I can honestly say I have never read a book based around Norse mythology before. How did you come up with the idea for Elsker?

Oh, gosh. Believe it or not, I owe Elsker to a cup of coffee. I was on a road trip along the Oregon coast when I pulled into one of those drive through huts on the side of the road. A really pretty, wholesome looking girl popped out to welcome me to Nehalem, and I checked out the city while she made my drink. There were trees to my left, a lone stoplight straight ahead, and a sign that boasted the town’s population at 250. It was totally charming. I wondered what the girl’s life there was like, and then I wondered how she’d react to something bigger than all of us dropping in on her world. Since I’m a huge Norse mythology fan, and an all around geek, I naturally chose “Norse god” as the something bigger to drop in on her. And since I used to be a competitive skier, I picked the God of Winter -- Ull.

When I got home I started jotting Kristia and Ull’s story in my journal. I never intended for it to be a book -- it was always just a fun little journal story I was writing for me. But by the time I finished it was ridiculously long, and I was totally in love with my imaginary friends. I decided to see if anyone else might like them too, and the journal story became Elsker and Endre, the first two Elsker Saga books.

I guess the moral of the story is to always follow your beverage cravings. *raises bottle* More wine, Aly? ;)

You know me so well, of course I want more wine!

How many books will there be in this series? And will they all be based around Ull and Kristia's relationship (rather than spinoffs with different lead characters)?

I mapped Kristia and Ull’s story over three books. Elsker, Endre, and Tro. But I fell so in love with Ull’s goddess friend Inga, I gave her a novella of her own. It’s called Tur, and it takes place before Elsker. You can download it for free on Smashwords! (

Who was your inspiration for the amazingly sexy Ull Myhr.

Why, the enormously smexy Alexander Skarsgard, of course! When you think “Norse god,” doesn’t your brain just scream SKARSY? No? That’s just my brain? Hmm.

Please let me in on your stalking secrets, as I may need to stalk Alexander Skarsgard in the very near future :)
Girl, I am all over this plan. We can hold each other upright while we swoon. ;)
A few months back I had the ginormous thrill of meeting my inspiration for Ull. A really kind (and super well connected) friend worked some magic, and I owe him big time. *blows kisses to awesome friend* I spent at least two hours doing my hair, another hour obsessing over which shoes to wear (I went with four inch nude heels, because a girl can never go wrong with four inch nude heels) and I tried really hard not to drool until after I’d walked away from His Hotness. And holy cow. Ull is even better looking in person than he is in my imagination. I mean, there is just nothing even remotely unattractive about Alexander Skarsgard. Nothing.
Oh, I'm gonna need some Gunnar eye candy who would you cast for Ull's bestie?
You know, I have no idea. I have a clear picture of Gunnar in my head, but I’ve never found a real life match. What do y’all think? Who could play a brown-haired, green-eyed, immortal assassin, who loves archery, fishing, and making his girl laugh? Pretty please tell me in the comments because I just have no clue!

Kristia is one of the strongest NA female leads I have read in a long time, would you say you share that trait with her?

Oh gosh, what a lovely thing to say. Thank you so much! I wish I had more of Kristia’s grace. She’s very level headed and doesn’t let much phase her. What I love about her is her lack of drama -- she assesses the situation, asks herself what Emily Post would do, and just soldiers through it. Kristia definitely got some of my quirks -- the obsessive note taking, the Much Ado love, the way she drinks her tea (one milk, two sugars). But that strength is all hers.

It's Ragnarok and you are hiding out waiting to see if Ull and Kristia make it. You are only allowed to have one book, one TV show (on endless loop), one movie, and one CD (Odin outlawed Ipods for some reason. Don't ask me why...I don't question Odin!)

Ooh, tough question! (And mean Odin!) Hmm. For my book, I’d choose The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, because it’s got something for every possible mood, and I’d imagine I’ll have a lot of emotions to work through while I wait out Ragnarok.

My TV show would have to be either True Blood or Big Bang Theory. On the one hand, there’s that Scandinavian dreamboat, Skarsy. But on the other hand, there’s Sheldon. And who among us does not love Sheldon Cooper? Please don’t make me choose!

My movie would be Anchorman. Ron Burgundy absolutely rocks my world.

And Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions got me through editing both Elsker and Endre. I heart that band massive, and I’d definitely want to listen to their music while I waited out the Norse apocalypse. (Demons is Ull’s unofficial theme song, dontcha know?)

Do you think you could find out for us if Ull prefers boxers or briefs? Ya know, just in case I need to do some Christmas or Birthday shopping for him. And if you say commando, this interview is OVER!!! My dirty mind wouldn't be able to handle that knowledge.
HAHAHA! I love this!
No, Ull definitely doesn’t go commando for everyday wear. He’s far too much of a rule follower. I can’t say what he does when he kicks back on weekends, but when he’s out with Kristia or off fighting dark elves, he’s in a snug pair of boxer-briefs. You know, like the kind David Beckham wore on the H&M billboards that nearly caused all those car accidents? Yeah…

Besides Ull of course, who is your current book boyfriend?
Why, Vampire Eric from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse books, of course. Though I’m also nursing a bit of a Rush Crush at the moment. I blitzed through all three of Abbi Glines’ Too Far books in about four days. And some #SexyKK girls I know told me I really need to meet Kellan soon…

I know Endre is expected to be released in September ***EEEKK!!!*** How long are you going to keep us hanging for book 3? Yes, I am already planning ahead!

You are so sweet! September 9th is the drop date for Endre, but I don’t have a definite timeline on Tro (book 3) yet. I know where Kristia and Ull’s story is going to go, and I’m excited to write it. But there’s this other Norse god who’s been talking in my head for a while, and I’m kind of itching to get his story down first. His saga is another Norse-inspired one (I swear, I have a one-track mind.) But it’s a whole different world from the Elsker world -- new gods, new side characters, a whole slew of new problems. But always drool-worthy Skarsgard-inspired Norse deities. Always.

Thanks so much for letting me visit with y’all! And please, if anyone can suggest a smokin’ hot actor to play Ull’s best bud Gunnar, tell me in the comments. Then we can all go stalk him together…

Who He Is
By Shanora Williams
Rating: 4 Glasses of Wine

Eliza Smith has never been the one to seek a relationship. She’s never dated a guy in her life, never even hugged a man (outside of her father/manager of the hot and popular rock band, FireNine) but when she decides to spend her summer on tour with FireNine, it all changes. Eliza really gets to meet Gage Grendel - her former crush from high school and the lead singer of FireNine - and witness sides to him to which she’ll begin to truly despise. She’ll ignore him, she’ll dislike his ways, she’ll do anything to try and stay away from him until Gage finally gets her to slip up and give in. She agrees on a casual fling with Gage, but soon they’ll both see how the fling will blur into something they can’t control and when it’s finally time for Eliza to go and accomplish her own dreams, she’ll know there’s more she took from Gage than she ever thought possible.

Our Review:
Let me start by saying I have read books before by Shanora and I love her as an author. So needless to say, I was a tiny bit (or a shit-ton!) excited when we got the ARC for her new book Who He Is. I had no idea what the book was about before I started reading but figured, "what the hell? I liked her other books". Ladies, I was once again NOT disappointed. I'd like to say this book is an emotional roller coaster, but its not. Mainly, I wanted to strangle Eliza and slap the shit out of Gage. And at the end I was saying to myself, (because it is not appropriate to cuss in front of young children), WHAT THE FUCK?!?!

Eliza, Eliza, Eliza! She kinda falls into the, what we at WZbookends would call, a "weak woman" category. Yes, she has deep dark secrets that are slowly revealed through the book. Yes, she "tries" to resist the sexiness that is Gage Grendel and prove to herself that she is not a cheap floozy. However, she's whiny and even though she tries not to be, she's emotionally clingy. She hasn't over come her "demons" and she lets them drag her down and rule her emotions. She is also a 21 year old college virgin!!! I feel like in more and more of the books I am reading these days the girls are virgins. I'm not sure what is so great about having the main female character be a virgin. One chapter she's like "I will not let him take this gift from me", and in the next, poof! they've fucked and it was AMAZING!!!! Ok I digress.....

Eliza is a troubled soul with a shitty past. She goes to live with her dad, Ben, who is the manager for the hot rock/alternative group Fire Nine. Spending her time mostly drawing and painting, Eliza lives a simple, uncomplicated life. Then her dad asks her to come on tour with him and the band for two months in the summer and, as he puts it, "live a little". She agrees after much hesitation and her decision will forever change her life.

Enter Gage.  What more can I say about Gage but, HOT DAMN! He is a smooth talking, cocky son of a bitch that has skeletons in his closet. Gage is the lead singer for Fire Nine and along with Montana, Deed and Roy, make up the sexy rock group. Gage is used to getting his way and having the ladies fall at his feet. But when he finds out that Ben has a daughter and not only is she hot, but will be touring with them for two months, it sets his world spinning.

Add a bunch of other kick ass people into the mix and the end product is one hell of a book, even though I found myself wanting to punch something more than anything else. The banter between the characters was great and I enjoyed how the relationships formed over time. However, the time it took to get from point A to point B sometimes felt slow as molasses. This book is going to be a trilogy from what the cover states and as a reader, this makes me both happy and sad. Happy, because there will be more story since so many questions were left unanswered.  Sad, because we need now! I look forward to reading the next book in the Fire Nine trilogy and seeing what happens with Eliza and Gage.

Shanora Williams, you have a faithful reader in this WZBookends blogger!!! I give Who He Is by Shanora Williams 4 glasses of White Zin! Cheers!!!

Just Human
By Kerry Heavens
Rating: 4 Glasses of Wine

Meet Liv and Danny...
Liv loves Danny. She knows she loves him more than he loves her, so she lets him go without a fight when his parents make him move back to America. She knows she will never love anyone like she loved him, but she has to move on.
Danny loves Liv. He knows he loves her more than she loves him, because she does nothing to get him to stay, so he goes quietly when his parents leave the UK. He knows he will never love anyone like he loved her, but he has to move on.
Twelve years on, they have made a good job of pretending, they may have almost forgotten. But when they get in touch via Facebook, it seems that it is all still there.
They quickly find that they are intensely compatible in ways they hadn’t even begun to explore before they were forced apart.
Can they put aside their fears and give it a go? Or will deep rooted doubts and insecurities tear them apart?

Our Review:

I just finished the story of Liv and Danny.  It started off a little slow....I had a hard time staying interested....that could have been from the wine I was drinking though....
But then, BAM!!!! It got G-O-O-D!!!

Liv is living her dream of owning a restaraunt and bar with her best friend, Max. She's just ended things with yet another crappy boyfriend when her first true love suddenly reappears in her life. She is hesitant to get involved so quickly because of the way things ended the first go round. But she decides to give it
a shot and see what happens.....

Danny is living as a bit of a recluse. He spends most of his days sleeping and nights working. Aside from his best friends, Jen and Scott, he doesn't get out much.  But a message from his past prompts him to reach out to the only girl he's ever loved.  After realizing he can't go on without exploring his feelings, he packs up and flies around the world to see Liv again.

I loved their story! It seemed so real life.  And the scenes where they talked (or thought) about their love for each other really made my heart swell.  I love, Love, LOVE how strong and independent Liv is.  She has a little bit of doubt when it comes to her relationship with Danny, but she knows exactly who she is and how successful she has become...and that is really something to admire.

Danny seems to be an amazing guy.  Not only does he have golden California good looks, but he's successful and loyal.  Not to mention the fact that he wants to spoil his girl.  And coming from a girl that likes to be spoiled.....this is a GOOD thing.  Also, dropping large amounts of cash on jewelry never hurt.

Oh, and let me not forget to mention the bedroom scenes......Steamy and sexy and had me wishing I was the words of Fall, "Hot Damn"!

My only, only complaint is that I've been left hanging (again)!!!!  Aside from having to wait on pins and needles to find out what happens, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Just Human gets 4 glass of wine.....which I will be helping  myself to in just a bit.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I’d been down in the bar, wondering if he’d made it home from his meeting. If he had, he hadn’t shown his face, so I planned to go and drag him down for something to eat and maybe a game of pool. He’d been working so hard I was worried. A lot had changed at work and no one's job was secure. He couldn’t switch off when he got home, that was why he’d stopped coming down in the evenings. I got it, but I thought I would try and convince him just this once. Maybe we could… well, I’m sure Max won't miss me for half an hour or so…
Mark, are you home?” I called as I came through the door, but I didn’t even finish the sentence before I saw them, through the doorway, in MY bedroom. They can’t have been at it long because they were still standing. He was removing her top slowly and kissing her neck. She yelped when she saw me, and when he spun round his flies were undone and his face was a picture. Weirdly, I almost laughed! I mean, Mark and Sarah, together? The concept was funny…well, if you ignore the betrayal.
He leapt away from her, shouting insincere, garbled apologies. Giving Sarah her due, she said nothing; I mean what can you say? She quietly covered herself and stood transfixed while he made a total idiot of himself. He got right up in my face, he was all “Babe I’m sorry” and “She means nothing to me” and “I love you.” It was pathetic to watch. I’m sure she was flattered!
I stood, mute, wincing while he tried to touch my face and bring me back to him, holding me, begging for forgiveness. By the time I found the words I had misplaced in my brain, he was sitting on the corner of the bed with his head in his hands. Exhausted from the little scene he’d made.
"Have you finished?" I whispered, unsure if my voice would let me down. He looked up at me, bereft. “Get the fuck out,” I said calmly and I really meant it. It was such an easy decision. Seeing him with her, with anyone, betraying my trust. Doing what my dad did. It was over, easy.
No, don’t do this Liv,” he begged. He was clutching at straws though. He knew I would be unsentimental about it if he cheated. It was cut and dry for me. He knew I would never back down.
It didn’t stop you though did it? Dickhead!
I shook my head and without raising my voice or getting emotional, I simply reminded him, “No second chances, not with this shit, you knew that. Now get out.”
He drew in a deep breath and got to his feet. I stepped away just in case he had any ideas about touching me. I watched passively as he tucked in his shirt and did up his trousers. Pushing thoughts of how they came to be open out of my head.
I’m glad I arrived when I did. Any earlier and they might have got away with it. Any later and I would have a mental image I’m not sure I could live with. I wonder if I interrupted the first time? Or was it regular sex? Did I want to know? Would it help? No. I didn't need the details.
As he picked up his tie and jacket, I couldn't stop myself.
How many times?” my mouth managed before my brain could shut it down.
Liv,” he whispered. I didn’t want to know anymore and I couldn't trust myself not to ask. Waving my hand to stop him answering, I said, “I’m going back to work, be gone when I get home.”

Cover Reveal: It All Started With A Lima Bean by Kimi Flores

Thursday, July 25, 2013

A past that haunts can be laid to rest through the act of forgiveness, even if the person you forgive is yourself. It must be gifted freely.

Abby Sullivan cherishes the life she is creating for herself in her hometown of Santa Barbara, California. She adores her best friend and supportive family. Her job as a kindergarten teacher offers her life hope and purpose. She is very talented at many things, especially hiding the pain of her past. That is until her world collides with Caleb Hunter’s, giving them both a lesson in forgiveness and love.

A life changing love is cruelly snatched by sickness and death. A person must be willing to give love, the greatest gift of all, to receive love.

A successful writer, Caleb is living life day-to-day. Giving refuge to his sad and lonely heart since his wife's sudden death from cervical cancer, his primary focus becomes honoring her memory by rearing their five-year-old daughter, Madison. Yet, when Madison Hunter walks into Miss Abby’s kindergarten class, everything changes for all three of them.

With a little nudge from a loving mother-in-law who has everyone’s best interest at heart, anything is possible, especially when forgiveness and love gift even more blessings than ever imaginable.

Kimi lives in So Ca with her high school sweetheart, prom date, and now husband of over 20 years as well as with her two boys that bring so much joy and laughter to her life. There is never a dull moment in Kimi’s day with these three guys by her side. Her family and she are happily involved in volunteer work with several local non-profit organizations. They believe that everyone needs to do their part and a portion of her sales will always go to charity. At an early age, Kimi discovered the magical world of imagination. Many stories were written as well as illustrated by her as a child. Not realizing at the time that she had dyslexia, schoolwork became extremely difficult, and her confidence as a reader and writer dwindled. Thanks to a high teacher who took the time to invest in her, Kimi found a love for literary legends such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving and Jane Austen. This teacher helped Kimi create one of the happiest school memories she holds. Discovering in college that she had the learning disability was terribly discouraging since help was not readily available and her reading and writing confidence fell once again. Needing to find a distraction when her husband unexpectedly ended up in the hospital for a week, Kimi explored the indie reading world. Jumping in with everything she had, Kimi pushed herself to read over 150 books last year. During that process, many characters reappeared in her imagination and insisted that their stories be told. Putting all self-doubt and barriers aside, she started writing the outlines and drafts for the four books in her Intertwined Hearts Series as well as bits and pieces of the three books in her next series, Down by the Bay. Her message to you is similar to that of pop icon,’s: ~You can focus on your problems or you can focus on your dreams ~

Our Review:

What better, and slightly ironic, way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon than curled up on the couch with a book titled April Showers?

To start, this book is based in England and I will admit, I read the whole thing in my terrible British accent. Being a southern girl, some of the phrases and slang used was a little confusing and a lot amusing.  My favorite was this line:
"Katie had met Ian whilst we were in our second year of college and fell pregnant after dating him for three months."
Fell pregnant??!!? Haha, I couldn't stop giggling over that! Anyway, I've been sidetracked.  Back to the review of this book.

I have to be honest, in the beginning I was not liking it.  Isaac seemed too controlling and domineering, and April seemed to be a little weak.  After reading so much I have come to realize that I HATE weak women! Think Fifty Shades, the Crossfire series... But that quickly changed when April stood up for herself with a little quick wit and a foul mouth.... Two of my favorite traits in a leading lady.
"I'm Lukas and this is April" he replied...
"April, huh as in the month?"
"Hollie, huh as in the plant?" I sniped back.
This book had me conflicted.  I found myself rooting for Lukas. I guess I didn't get how April could fall so hard for Isaac after half a night together.  Meanwhile, she has Lukas all but licking her toes!!!   I mean, I get that Isaac was H-O-T..........
"He was at least six foot tall and looked like he was in his mid-twenties.  I could see the outlines of his toned muscles through his shirt and I was pretty sure that he had a six pack hiding under there.  His dark brown hair was messy and matched his stubble, giving his good looks a bad boy edge."
I would probably be drooling over him too.  Maybe I'm just jealous I don't have two guys after me!! Because really, Lukas didn't sound too hard on the eyes himself!
"He smiled and I couldn't help but think how handsome it made him look.  He was good looking in a boy next door kind of way.  He was about five foot ten with a slim build and sandy blonde hair."
That being said, I really actually enjoyed this book once I got past Isaac and his eye rolling inducing controlling-ness. Is that even a word people??!!  And I absolutely LOVED this quote:
"Love isn't safe.  Love is crazy and scary and unpredictable. You can't control it and you sure as hell can't fight it.  It's one of life's greatest risks...but it's one of life's greatest gifts."
Lemme tell ya something.  I am one impatient chick.  Christmas time? I'm ready to start giving out gifts December 15th. My birthday? I am begging to know what I got a week beforehand.  All of that I say to tell you I don't usually like books that leave me hanging.  And this book ends in a CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!   I am about to DIE to know what happens next!!!! How long must I be forced to wait in eager anticipation for the follow up?

So, in closing, I am impatiently, eagerly looking forward to seeing how this story ends, even if I am a little bummed that I've been left hanging.  April Showers by Karli Perrin gets 4 glasses of wine from this bad British accent reader.
